It can be influenced by the weight distribution and the size of the individual goods being transported. In North America, standard FTL trailers are often 53 feet in length and have a width of 8.5 feet. The maximum legal weight limit for FTL shipments in the United States is typically around 80,000 pounds (36,287 kilograms). However, weight restrictions can vary by country and region. Local axle limits and bridge formulas may further reduce allowable payload and routing options.

Cross - border

Shipments

Border crossing procedures for Full Truckload (FTL) shipments vary by corridor and customs rules. DGL streamlines every step—coordinating brokers, pedimentos/ACE-ACI filings, eManifests, and inspections; managing transload options, seal control, and appointment windows; and syncing carriers on both sides. Our bilingual team monitors milestones in real time to minimize dwell and keep USA–Mexico–Canada FTL moves compliant, predictable, and on schedule.

FAQ´S

FTL uses an entire trailer for one shipper, which means:

  • Faster transit (no terminal stops or re-handling).

  • Lower damage risk (sealed trailer, single touch).

  • Predictable appointments and tighter delivery windows.

  • Cost-efficient on dense freight or ≥10–15 pallets / ≥20,000 lb.

  • Works for reefer, flatbed and high-value moves with dedicated visibility.

Pick PTL when your shipment is too large/pricey for LTL but doesn’t need a full trailer. As a rule of thumb:

  • 6–18 pallets, 8–28 linear feet, 8,000–28,000 lb (approx.).

  • Fewer touches than LTL → lower damage probability.

  • Quicker transit than multi-stop LTL.
DGL can quote PTL vs. LTL vs. FTL so you pick the best fit for cost, speed and risk.

  • Dry Van 53’ (E-tracks, straps, air-ride).

  • Reefer (temperature-controlled, continuous monitoring).

  • Flatbed / Step Deck / RGN / Conestoga (tarps, chains, oversize).

  • Team service & high-value options on request.

Detention is a fee when loading/unloading exceeds the carrier’s free time (commonly the first 2 hours at shipper/consignee). It compensates the driver for lost driving time and schedule impact.
How to avoid it: accurate appointments, pre-staged freight, quick paperwork, live-load readiness or drop trailer programs. Your DGL AM will confirm applicable free time and accessorials before pickup.
