The port’s TEU volume has been growing significantly, with March volume 34% higher than in previous years. In addition, the Port of Charleston will open the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal, which will have five ship-to-shore cranes. The Leatherman Terminal, which will have five ship-to-shore cranes, 25 gantry cranes and the terminal will add 2.4 million TEUs of capacity.


In its container record, the South Carolina Ports Authority moved 248,786 TEUs through the port’s Wanso Welch and North Charleston containers in March. Its previous record was in 2019 with a movement of 233,110 TEUs. Likewise, imports in the month of April increased 50% year over year, from 76,019 TEUs in March 2020 to 113,867 TEUs this 2021.
